Community Service is one of the cornerstones of the Boy Scout program. In the late
1980’s, a Scout of Troop 46 conducted a food drive for the hungry as his Eagle Scout
service project. Since that time, our Troop has conducted an annual Scouting for
Food campaign.
For many of those years, our Scouts delivered flyers to the residents of Windsor Heights and western Des Moines soliciting non-perishable food items that were picked up and delivered to the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry. Unfortunately, many of the donated food items were later discarded by the DMARC staff because the items were out-dated or not considered sellable by grocer standards. In 2008, we established a partnership with many local grocery stores to assist with our food drive. This change was made in an effort to improve the freshness and quality of food items received. Over the lifetime of this campaign over twenty thousand items have been donated to the DMARC Food Pantry that operates eight distribution locations within Polk County. For more information about the services offered by Des Moines Area Religious Council please click on the following link: www.dmreligious.org. This year’s campaign will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010. Residents may deliver their non-perishable food items to any of the following locations between 9:00 am and 1:00: Windsor Heights HyVee (7101 University Ave) Suggested food items to consider: |
